How do I find the MAC address for my network card?

This article provides neccessary information on how to find out what the MAC address is for your network card for various Microsoft operating systems.

Select your operating system:
Windows 95, 98, ME
Windows 2000, XP


Windows 95, 98, ME

  • Click on Start, then on Run.

  • In the Open dialog box, type 'winipcfg' and press enter.

  • A box will open up in the middle of your screen.

  • Change the top box from ppp adapter to whatever your NIC card is.

  • Your network card MAC address is listed on the second line as Adapter Address.

Windows 2000, XP

  • Click on Start, then on Run.

  • In the Open dialog box, type 'cmd' and press enter. That will open the Command line window.

  • With that open type the following 'ipconfig /all' and press enter.

  • That will output a lot of information. Look in the section of Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection.

  • At the end of the line that says Physical Address will be your network cards MAC address.
